iPad review (late 2012)

DNP iPad review late 2012

Welcome to the new new iPad, same as the old new iPad. Well, mostly, anyway. It was less than eight months ago that Apple grafted a Retina display onto its world-conquering tablet, giving every other slate on the market resolution envy, while enchanting gadget lovers with world-class performance and battery life.

Now, it's obsolete. Put out to pasture just as it was hitting its stride and replaced by this, the fourth-generation iPad -- still just called "new iPad." Other than a Lightning connector on the bottom it's visually indistinguishable from its predecessor. Even its starting MSRP of $499 stays the same. But, on the inside where it counts, is the new, fire-breathing A6X processor. Could this be possibly worth buying a second new iPad in just one year, or could this perhaps be the one you've been waiting for? Hold on to your wallets and click on through to find out.

Video: Election Day far from candidates' minds as Sandy barrels through East Coast

News sites knocked out as data center floods

When you see a website go down, the blame usually falls on hackers or, more often, software bugs. We don't often think of the Web as having a physical existence, but sure enough, Sandy has shown that nature can impact websites with greater force than any team of malicious code wizards can summon up.

The Enzo Ferrari Story

The Enzo Ferrari Story

It's mid winter, northern Italy, February 1898, and it is snowing heavily. Heavily enough, in fact, to prevent one young couple in the area from officially recording the birth of their son until two days after the event, on 20 February after his actual birth on the 18th - so forever after, 20 February 1898 would always be quoted as his birth date. And as it would turn out, that would become typical of the new arrival's relationship with authority and convention almost throughout his life, when he never seemed to have much time for doing things the 'ordinary' way. Because Enzo Anselmo Ferrari, as the boy was officially registered at two days old, would achieve great things, but rarely by working to the book.

The family lived on the outskirts of Modena, where Enzo's father, Alfredo, ran a small but busy metalworking business that, for most of the time, gave the family a fairly comfortable lifestyle. Enzo had an older brother, also called Alfredo, who was two years his senior. They shared many things, including a bedroom when they were young, and a love of homing pigeons, but in one respect they were quite different, and with a surprising twist. Alfredo senior would have liked both boys to follow in his footsteps and become engineers, but while young Alfredo accepted the idea and studied diligently, Enzo (who would become synonymous with some of the most exotic automobile engineering in the world) never showed the remotest interest in formal engineering training, or to be honest in a formal education at all.

At school he was far more interested in sports than in academic subjects, and he fulfilled one of his childhood career ambitions by briefly writing local football match reports for the prestigious newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. But he grew out of an even bigger ambition, to become an opera singer, and in September 1908, he switched ideas again, after his father had taken him to nearby Bologna where he saw Felice Nazzaro's FIAT winning the Coppa Florio road race. Now, the ten-year-old Enzo Ferrari wanted to be a racing driver.

He had already had contact with cars, at a time when they were still rare in rural Italy where the family lived. His father owned one, and had started to service and repair cars for other owners in his workshops. And in his early teens, Enzo himself began to learn how to drive. How little did he know then that there was going to be such a famous marque of sportscars known as Ferrari, and would go on to world recognition on the road and on the racetrack.

At the same time, Enzo Ferrari was being forced to grow up very quickly. In 1914, World War I broke out; and in 1916, within months of each other, Enzo's father and brother both died - his father from pneumonia, his brother from an illness contracted during military service. In 1917, Enzo followed him into the army, and was assigned to be a blacksmith, shoeing horses. Like father and older brother, though, he suffered illnesses, and after a round of operations and hospital stays he was discharged in 1918, with what looked like poor prospects for the immediate future.

The family business had died with his father and brother, he had no real qualifications, and there were very few jobs on offer. He found one, though, and with a motoring connection - driving refurbished ex-military light vehicle chassis between Turin and Milan, for a Bolognese engineer who had started a business rebodying them for the civilian market. And it was through this apparently mundane driving job that Enzo Ferrari moved a step closer to that still burning motor sporting ambition. History would show how he fulfilled his dreams with the number of Ferrari sales that have been acheived since that time. The world just wouldn't be the same without the prancing horse.

Barnes & Noble bolstering Nook Video catalogue, bringing UltraViolet to the HD and HD+

Barnes & Noble bolstering Nook Video catalogue, bringing UltraViolet to the HD and HD+

Barnes & Noble is seriously beefing up its Nook ecosystem by striking deals with studios and other providers to bring a ton of new video content to its HD and HD+ tablets. Debuting alongside the slates, expected to start shipping in the US this week, thousands of SD and HD movies and TV shows from the likes of NBCUniversal, 20th Century Fox and others will be available for your consumption. Brits will get the same opportunity a little later, coinciding with the local release of the tablets closer to the holiday season. B&N won't force you to buy its hardware to enjoy the expanded catalogue, as it'll be releasing free Nook Video apps in the future to access the content from all platforms. What's more, you'll also be able to view UltraViolet video on the HD and HD+, meaning you can watch all that previously purchased content right from the get-go. This is certainly a huge bonus for consumers that have a big UV library, and coupled with all the new content, we wouldn't be surprised if Nook sales start stealing a little heat from the Fire.

Markets drop as New York battens down the hatches

LONDON (AP) ? Markets started the week on a downbeat note as investors fretted over the cost of a mammoth storm that was heading towards the eastern U.S. and prompted the closure of Wall Street on Monday.

Much of the East Coast, including New York and Washington D.C., were coming to a standstill as millions of people prepared for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, which is due to make landfall later in the day and converge with two other weather systems.

Authorities on Wall Street confirmed Sunday there would be no trading, in person or electronically, on Monday. Wall Street is expected to remain closed on Tuesday, while many companies that were due to report their corporate earnings will likely delay their publication.

"The economic impact cannot be underestimated," said Elsa Lignos, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets.

Insurers such as Munich Re, Hannover Re and Zurich Insurance underperformed other stocks as investors worried about the potential cost of the storm's damage.

They weighed on indexes across Europe. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was down 0.2 percent at 5,797 while Germany's DAX fell 0.4 percent to 7,204. The CAC-40 in France was 0.7 percent lower at 3,411.

The uncertainty generated by the "superstorm" comes at the start of a big week in the United States. This is the last full week before next Tuesday's presidential election and culminates Friday with the release of monthly jobs data, which many analysts think could have an impact on the vote.

"A significant swing in either direction is likely to be heavily reported in the media, potentially swinging the undecided voter," said James Hughes, chief market analyst at Alpari, of the jobs figures.

Despite the storm clouds over the U.S., the dollar has remained firm, partly because it often garners support at times of investor unease. The euro was 0.3 percent lower at $1.2905, for example.

Earlier, Asian markets shed early gains and closed mostly lower. Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell marginally to 8,929.34 a day before the Bank of Japan's monetary policy committee was to meet, to grapple yet again with the country's longstanding economic doldrums. South Korea's Kospi ended barely changed at 1,891.52 while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.2 percent to 21,511.05.

Oil prices were on the retreat alongside equities with benchmark oil for December delivery down 30 cents to $85.98 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Hurricane Sandy: Phone Companies Prepare For Post-Storm Crisis, Lining Up Disaster Recovery Trailers

(Monday, October 29th, 2012)

Phone companies on the eastern seaboard are preparing Monday for the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy by topping up fuel for backup generators and lining up disaster recovery trailers to move into flooded areas after the storm passes.

At Verizon the largest landline phone company on the East Coast, spokesman John Bonomo says the storm had not yet had any major effect, and the network is performing normally.

At AT&T, employees are adding portable generators to cell towers and checking on fuel levels, says spokesman Mark Siegel.

As usual, the phone companies are recommending that people use text messaging when disaster hits and network capacity is strained. Text messages use minimal network resources compared to phone calls and Web surfing.

UK firms plan to add staff over next 12 months - CBI survey

LONDON (Reuters) - British firms plan to hire more staff over the next 12 months, a survey by business lobby CBI showed on Monday, raising hopes that a strong improvement of the labour market will continue.

The survey of 300 firms, employing over 1.4 million people between them, showed that 35 percent of employers expect staffing levels to rise over the next 12 months, while 15 percent see it shrinking, the CBI said.

While the resulting balance of +20 was lower than at the same point last year, the survey still bode well for the labour market, the CBI said.

"The performance of our flexible labour market in generating jobs in a sluggish economy is a mini-miracle," said CBI chief policy director Katja Hall.

"Businesses look set to continue with the positive but cautious approach to hiring that we've seen over the past couple of years, and this is echoed in expected pay restraint designed to protect employment," she added.

The number of Britons in work hit a record-high in August and the unemployment rate fell to 7.9 percent despite an economy that only emerged from a nine-month recession in the third quarter.

How a shrinking economy can create new jobs has been the biggest puzzle for economists and central bankers, though many have pointed out that wages increases have lagged inflation.

The CBI survey showed that employers expected this trend to continue. 36 percent of firms planned wage rises either below-inflation or targeted at specific employees. 16 percent of firms were planning a pay freeze.

Where do I click again? A Windows 8 guide

8 hrs.

With the launch?of Windows 8, buyers are about to discover a computing experience unlike anything they've seen before. Here's a guide to getting past some of the hurdles.

The main thing to know is that Windows 8 is designed especially for touch-screen computers, to make desktops and laptops work more like tablets. It is Microsoft's way of addressing the popularity of tablets, namely the iPad. But Windows 8 will work with mouse and keyboard shortcuts, too. It'll take some getting used to, though.

There are two versions of Windows 8, or more precisely, there's Windows 8 and there's Windows RT. They look the same, but they run on different processing chips. Windows 8 runs on standard chips from Intel and AMD and is the version you'd get if you're upgrading your home desktop or notebook PC. Windows RT is the version for light, small tablets and laptop-tablet hybrids.

Windows 8 will run programs written for older versions of Windows. Windows RT won't. It's limited to applications specifically written for it and available through Microsoft's store. (As a consolation, a version of Microsoft Office is included free on Windows RT devices).

Here are some tips on how to navigate the new Windows:

??When you start a Windows 8 machine, you're greeted with a screen that shows the time and a pretty picture. To get past it with a touch-screen device, swipe upwards with your finger from the bottom edge of the screen. If you have a keyboard, hit any key.

? Next, you'll see a mosaic of Live Tiles, each representing an application. Programs specifically written for Windows 8 will run in this new environment, which is unofficially nicknamed Metro. Each application fills the screen when you run it. Applications written for older Windows versions will open up in something that looks very much like the old Windows Desktop environment. You can switch back and forth between Metro and the new Desktop, though Microsoft wants people to eventually use only Metro.

? The Desktop screen lacks a Start button, so it's hard to start programs from there. Microsoft's idea is that users should learn to go to the Metro tiles to start programs or access settings, even if many programs, including some Windows utilities, will open up in Desktop. To get back to the tiled Start screen with a mouse or touchpad, move the mouse cursor to the top right corner of the screen, then swipe it down to the "Start" icon that appears. If you have a touch screen, reveal the Start icon by swiping in from the right edge of the screen.

? In the Desktop environment, you can glance at the Taskbar to see which Desktop programs are running. If you're a mouse or touchpad user in Metro and want to see what's running, you have to know this trick: Move the cursor into the top left corner of the screen, then drag it down along the left edge of the screen. If you have a touch screen, swipe in from the left edge, then quickly swipe back in.

? Neither environment will show you programs that are running in the other environment, but if you have a touch screen, swiping in from the left side of the screen lets you jump between open applications. The "Alt-Tab" combination does the same thing with a keyboard, in case you aren't using a touch screen.

? There are two versions of Internet Explorer, one for each environment. A Web page you open in one doesn't appear in the other, so if you're trying to find your way back to a page, it helps to remember which browser you were using.

? When using Metro on a touch screen, you close a program by first swiping your finger down from the top edge of the screen. That shrinks the window. Then you swipe your finger down to the bottom edge of the screen. Don't stray to the right or left edges of the screen, or the app will end up "docked" in a column along that edge. You can perform the same action with a mouse cursor by clicking and dragging from the top edge of the screen, but using the old "Alt-F4" command is easier.

? In the Desktop version of Internet Explorer, you can see at a glance which pages you have open in "tabs." In Metro, each Web page fills the screen, leaving no room for tabs.

To see which other pages are open on a touch-screen computer, you swipe your finger down from the top of the screen to reveal thumbnails of the other windows. Don't sweep too far, or you'll shrink the window instead.

If you're using a mouse in Metro, you right-click anywhere on the screen to reveal the tabs. Of course, this means right-clicking no longer does any of things it can be used for in previous versions of Windows, such as letting you open a link in a new tab.

? When Microsoft introduced Windows 95, some people thought it was amusing and counterintuitive that the procedure for shutting down the computer began with the "Start" button. In Windows 8, that incongruity is gone along with the Start button, but shutting down with a mouse or touchpad isn't obvious either. Move the cursor into the top right corner of the screen. A menu will pop out. Sweep down to the "Settings" button that appears, and click it. Then click "Power," then "Shut down." If you're on a touch screen, start by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, then tap "Settings."?

In blustery Texas, Putnam remains in hunt for PGA Tour card - Golf ...

Tacoma native Michael Putnam remains on pace to regain a place on the PGA Tour next season after he finished his round Friday with a birdie in cold, breezy conditions at the Web.com Tour Championship in McKinney, Texas.

Putnam shot a 1-over-par 72 and is tied for fourth with a 5-under 137 total. He trails midway leader Justin Hicks by three shots.

The top 60 on the money list qualified for the season-ending event at TPC Craig Ranch, and the final top 25 will earn 2013 PGA Tour cards.

Putnam entered at No. 30, but his projected finish is in the top 25. A wrist injury ended his 2011 season on the PGA Tour. He missed the cut in four PGA Tour events this year and returned to the developmental tour to try to earn promotion to the major tour.

Hicks, at 11th on the money list, has already wrapped up a tour card. He shot a 2-under 69, one of the best rounds of the day, to take a two-stroke lead.

Hicks leads the 60-player field in fairways and greens in regulation, hitting 24 of 28 fairways and 30 of 36 greens.

?I?m just trying to hit a lot of fairways and greens and hopefully give myself a lot of opportunities and get one or two to fall,? Hicks said.

Olympia?s Andres Gonzales, who was 12th on the money list and assured of regaining the PGA Tour status he had in 2011, has struggled with rounds of 75 and 73.

GARRIGUS 14 UNDER

Five strokes off the lead after two rounds, Tiger Woods thinks the CIMB Classic course ?can be had? and still expects a total of better than 20 under to win it in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Robert Garrigus, the second-round leader by two strokes over South Africa?s Jbe Kruger, has upped the ante. With back-to-back rounds of 64 and a 14-under total of 128, he?s looking to go 10 strokes beyond Woods? projection to win.

?I?m going to try to get to 30 if I can,? he said.

Woods is tied for fifth a 9 under after a 67.

ELSEWHERE

Sweden?s Peter Hanson shot an 8-under 64 to take a two-stroke lead over defending champion Rory McIlroy after two rounds of the European Tour?s BMW Masters in Shanghai. ? Norway?s Suzann Pettersen shot a 7-under 65 to share the second-round lead with South Korea?s Inbee Park in the LPGA Taiwan Championship in Yang Mei, Taiwan. Taiwan?s Yanki Tseng is two shots behind. ? Mark Calcavecchia shot a 5-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead over Kenny Perry in the suspended first round of the Champions Tour?s AT&T Championship in San Antonio. Locksmiths In Sydney As Allies In Satisfying Needs : Home ...

You are here: Home / Security / Locksmiths In Sydney As Allies In Satisfying Needs

Next to physiologic requirements, safety and security are the second most significant needs essential for man?s survival in Abraham Maslow?s renowned hierarchy of needs. Once his bodily needs are satisfied, the next thing man seeks is the sense of being safe. The way he tries to find a steady job for financial security, takes maintenance medications for his health and well-being, checks on his wife every three hours to psychologically assure him that she is unscathed, purchases pricey cars that can protect him in case of collisions, and puts locks on the entrances of his property so that no burglars would come inside are behavioral manifestations and cues to his desire for safety. The inability to fully satisfy this need hinders his success in the higher stages of Maslow?s pyramid such as love, belongingness, self-esteem, and self-actualization. This kind of need therefore makes locksmiths in Sydney very useful allies in giving man satisfaction.

Who are Locksmiths
A lock is a tool that is used to secure something in a closed position which comes with a matching key that opens it. On the other hand, a smith is a person that uses a forge or mold to design different pieces of metal into useful objects. Therefore, a locksmith is a person who specializes in creating and designing locks along with their respective keys.

Services Needed
Today, locksmithing services have evolved along with the advancements in modern technology. They are no longer focused merely on the old-fashioned padlock installment, or key fitting and duplication. Safes, digital vaults, surveillance cameras, burglar alarms, fingerprint scanners, and other devices which may be a component of a complex security system are now also dealt with by these professionals.

Your Personal Needs
The kind of services to acquire would depend on what type of protection you require. Automobile, residence, industrial, and emergency services are a couple of examples. There are those who serve you only at the time of set-up or replacements, while there are also others who meet your needs round the clock in sophisticated and professional surveillance tasks.

Choosing and Comparing
When selecting a locksmith in Sydney, make sure that he comes from a company that is reliable and experienced. Faulty installation of safety features can place your loved ones and property at risk, which is why it?s very important to check their credentials first. Service rates, customer reviews, accreditation, training, years of business, insurance plans, and accessibility are a couple of elements you may compare from various companies through the internet and yellow pages.

Amazon Q3 2012 earnings: $13.18 billion revenue, net loss of $274 million

Amazon announces Q3 2012 earnings

Amazon has just released its earnings for the third quarter of the year and it looks like it's slightly off analysts' expectations. The company reported $13.18 billion in revenue (a growth of 27 percent) and an operating loss of $28 million, with net income standing at a loss of $274 million. As Amazon notes, though, a chunk of that, some $169 million, comes from losses resulting from its investment in LivingSocial -- it says the figure is "primarily attributable to its impairment charge of certain assets, including goodwill." Expectedly, the company still isn't offering any specific numbers for device sales, noting only that the Kindle Fire HD is the number one selling product across Amazon worldwide, and that the next two bestselling products worldwide are the Kindle Paperwhite and the $69 Kindle. As for its outlook for the next quarter, the company is expecting net sales of between $20.25 billion and $22.75 billion, and operating income of anywhere from a loss of $490 million to a profit of $310 million. You can find the company's full breakdown of all the numbers at the link below.

Military plans new hypersonic flight after failure

(AP) ? The U.S. military said Wednesday it is planning another unmanned hypersonic flight in the wake of a failed attempt.

The flight, scheduled for next spring or summer, would be the fourth test of the experimental X-51A Waverider designed to reach Mach 6, or 3,600 mph, after being dropped by a B-52 bomber.

The Air Force has been studying hypersonic technologies with the hopes of deploying fast strikes around the globe.

Two months ago, a problem with a control fin during the third flight caused an X-51A to lose balance and crash off the Southern California coast.

Though the aircraft successfully detached from the B-52 and ignited its rocket booster to fly to Mach 4.8, it became unstable and did not activate its exotic scramjet engine ? considered the key feature of the test.

An investigation ruled out software or power failures. Signs point to a "random vibration issue," though more work is needed to pinpoint the exact cause, said program manager Charlie Brink at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

None of flights so far has reached the intended goal of six times the speed of sound. During the first flight in 2010, an X-51A flew near Mach 5 for three minutes. A test flight last year ended prematurely with an X-51A unsuccessfully trying to restart its engine.

Brink said he expected the military to continue hypersonic flight research after next year's final flight but did not get into specifics.

Marketing comics to fans of comics adaptations | Robot 6 @ Comic ...

Advertising merging TV and comics

News bulletin: The Walking Dead is a friggin? huge deal.

I?m not sure how to measure it, but at least culturally I think the zombie-survival tale by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard is on track to become the biggest deal to come from indie/creator-owned comics since Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird?s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, circa 1988. I think it surpassed Todd McFarlane?s Spawn during Season 1. Heck, it might even be giving some corporate-owned properties a run for their money.

Fortunately, we haven?t quite hit Christmas special saturation, but there are plenty of items in the AMC Walking Dead shop: action figures and figurines, board games, T-shirts, calendars, posters, costumes, busts, music from the show, a companion book, even dog tags.

But Kirkman has been doing something with the success of the show that too few comic book adaptations do: He constantly reminds viewers that this hit television drama comes from a comic book. The most recent example is the inclusion of The Walking Dead Compendium One, which collects the first 48 issues of the comic, in the collector?s edition of the video game. It also boasts box art by Adlard. That strategy, of visually associating the TV show with the comic, is something Kirkman seems to try to sneak in whenever he can, and it?s effective to people who may initially only care about the AMC series. The cover to the special edition of Season 1, the Official Companion Book, and some posters all use imagery from the comic or from comic artists using aesthetics and styles more from the comic than from the adaptation. There have been other strategic connections made: The big zombie obstacle course at Comic-Con International was more about the comic reaching Issue 100 than about the AMC show. And of course there?s The Talking Dead, the talk show that follows each episode of the AMC series. Kirkman is often there, and while the focus is on the TV adaptation, he invariably mentions the comic book as the source material. Host Chris Hardwick has also stated that he?s read all of the comics. And the Michonne origin story in Playboy definitely received enough press outside of comics circles to reach non-readers. Perhaps most surreal of all, that ?Drive to Survive? contest with Hyundai featured Adlard art from the comic book wrapped around the car.

For some this may read as lip service, and sure he could do more. (And some may think it?s unnecessary, and I?ll get to that in a moment.) But I?m hard pressed to think of a single creator who has used his 15 minutes to try to push attention back to the medium more than Kirkman. I don?t know how much he?s had to fight to get each of these plugs but from my experiences with Hollywood, I would bet every instance was a headache. Fortunately, it pays off, with The Walking Dead comic collections appearing regularly on the bestseller lists. For instance, the very first volume, originally released in 2004, has become a perennial favorite; it?s No. 10 on this week?s New York Times graphic novel chart, joined by The Walking Dead Compendium One at No. 3, and Compendium Two at No. 1. Something is directing new readers to the comic.

So, yay, Kirkman. But you might ask, ?What about Stan Lee?? Shouldn?t he get some credit? I agree he?s an amazing public figure who has done a lot to bring comics to Hollywood and, in turn, to public awareness. So, yes, he definitely gets points, but awareness and active participation are two different things. I?m aware knitting is still an active industry thanks to my mother. That doesn?t mean I?m buying yarn. Even Lee has admitted he hasn?t read a Marvel comic book in years. He might remind people comic books exist, but he doesn?t actively point people to them. Kirkman is actively directing people back to his comics, and through his Skybound imprint and his position at Image Comics, to titles by others.

It?s an important distinction (and here?s where we get to why it?s important to do at all). Because as far as comics have come (and we?ve come far in the last 10 years), they are still primarily seen as a secondary form of entertainment, as stapled storyboards for future movies and TV shows instead of an end product and art form in and of themselves. Imagine if Marvel or DC Comics put a proportionate amount of effort in merging the movies and TV shows with the comics in the public?s eye as Kirkman has? Sure, there?s the occasional minicomic in a DVD or Blu-Ray box, but nothing on the level Kirkman has been doing. That should change. And yes, that might mean committing the apparent cardinal sin of dipping into one of the immense buckets of money from the movies. But once again, because I know big companies need to be reminder of this: If you like money, it?s a good strategy.

Special Etch A Sketch shakes up county GOP

? There will be politics, rallying cries, promises and beans. There will also be kids? toys.

Ohio Art?s Etch A Sketch toys are vehemently nonpartisan, but after a top aide to presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Romney?s views would change from trying to please hard-core conservatives to the mass-appeal of moderation after the primaries ?like an Etch A Sketch,? the classic toy became a political metaphor.

?We stand firmly behind our proclamation that ?We have a left knob and a right knob for each political party.? And ? ? when we both work together, we can do loop de loops,? ? the toy?s website states. ?We?re especially serious about the loop de loops part.?

So to commemorate being part of the lexicon, Ohio Art has created special editions of its classic drawing tablet, the ?Shake It Up, America!? Etch A Sketch. They come in both red and blue for the red-state blue-state designations that have become so popular, and you can even vote for red or blue on the shakeitupamerica.net website.

But just because the company is non-partisan ? the website says ?Our political neutrality is unflappable? ? doesn?t mean its officers are. So Ohio Art Chairman Bill Killgallon will not only attend the Allen County Republican Party?s annual Bean Dinner, but he?ll be bringing 100 of the special edition Etch A Sketches with him.

Party Chairman Steve Shine said some of the toys will be given away as prizes, the rest will be sold at cost.

?Why he?s bringing the blue ones, I don?t know,? Shine said, laughing. ?Unless they were taken off the product line for malfunctions.?

Shine said Killgallon has attended Allen County GOP events in the past, but this is the first time he?s been singled out as a guest.

?We?ve known each other quite a few years,? Shine said. ?But this is the first time he?s brought something germane to the event.?

Keynote speakers will be U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman, U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock, and gubernatorial candidate Rep. Mike Pence.

?Being that it?s one week before the election, it?s going to be a supercharged political atmosphere,? Shine said.

The dinner is 6 p.m. Oct. 30 at Ceruti?s Summit Park, 6601 Innovation Blvd. Tickets are $65 per person with a cash bar.

A $175 VIP reception begins at 5 p.m. Call 745-1970 or email beandinner@allencountygop.org for information.

Killgallon?s trip from Bryan won?t be a long one, but the Etch A Sketches he brings will have come a long way ? production was moved to China just before Christmas 2000.

NFL Power Rankings: AFC North reaction

October, 23, 2012

Oct 23

11:46

AM ET

The AFC North isn't as good as it was last season. But this is far from being the worst division in football. In the Week 8 Power Rankings, the AFC North is the fourth-ranked division in the league but it's the top-ranked one in the conference. The NFC North, East and West divisions are currently ahead of the AFC North.

Here's a recap:

BALTIMORE RAVENS

ESPN Power Ranking: No. 6

My ranking: No. 7

2012 record: 5-2

Comment: The Ravens should consider themselves fortunate that they slipped only two spots after getting embarrassed in Houston. Baltimore remains the second-highest AFC team behind the Texans. This matches the Ravens' lowest ranking of the year. They were No. 6 in Weeks 1 and 3.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

ESPN Power Ranking: No. 10

My ranking: No. 13

2012 record: 3-3

Comment: You can't call me an AFC North homer. The four other voters had the Steelers ranked 12th or higher. I had trouble moving the Steelers higher after two bad losses on their resume (Tennessee and Oakland) and a poor first half at Cincinnati on Sunday night. The Steelers climbed four spots on the official power rankings, which was tied for the biggest move up this week.

CINCINNATI BENGALS

ESPN Power Ranking: No. 22

My ranking: No. 25

2012 record: 3-4

Comment: The Bengals have lost three straight, which includes two at home and one to the previously winless Browns. That's why I dropped them four spots this week. The only 3-4 team that I have below them is the Bills. But Cincinnati only dipped one spot in the official power rankings to No. 22, which is a season low.

CLEVELAND BROWNS

ESPN Power Ranking: No. 30

My ranking: No. 30

2012 record: 1-6

Comment: The Browns didn't return to the bottom of the power rankings, thanks to the Jaguars losing and the Chiefs being on a bye. The only one-win team higher than Cleveland is the Panthers. The Browns, though, did receive one last-place vote, which came from John Clayton. Could the Browns finish the season below the Brady Quinn-led Chiefs?

Here are my rankings:

1. Falcons

2. Texans

3. Giants

4. 49ers

5. Bears

6. Packers

7. Ravens

8. Patriots

9. Vikings

10. Cardinals

11. Broncos

12. Seahawks

13. Steelers

14. Dolphins

15. Redskins

16. Eagles

17. Chargers

18. Cowboys

19. Rams

20. Colts

21. Saints

22. Jets

23. Titans

24. Buccaneers

25. Bengals

26. Lions

27. Raiders

28. Bills

29. Panthers

30. Browns

31. Jaguars

32. Chiefs
