LogMeIn Ignition (for Android)

LogMeIn Ignition for Android is a remote control app for accessing PCs and Macs from Android devices (support for tablets was recently introduced).? The software works very well?aside from a minor glitch when the app momentarily froze on me?providing not only remote control over machines, but audio streaming, light video streaming and a secured connection, all from your Android handset.

All of that remote goodness will cost you though, big time, at least when it comes to a mobile app?$30. That price might seem like a frivolous waste of money for those who only need to connect to home or the occasional work machine, since there are free and low costs apps available for about a buck, such as Jump Desktop, which can provide basic remote connectivity. However, for those who need reliable remote access, advanced features or may need to administer a server time-to-time from an Android device?it's a worthy investment.

Install
The app is available from LogMeIn's website. You can get it by scanning a QR code on the site or by simply downloading it from the Android Market.

During the install process, the app prompts for several needed permissions to the device such as modifying/deleting the SD card, access to the Internet, viewing the network state and read access to the system log files. The fact the permissions part of the install is automated is a time-saver. I have installed apps on my Android device only to have them not run, displaying a host of error messages, typically because of permissions issues.

Setup
Setting up LogMeIn begins with creating a free account on LogMeIn's website. Next, you have to download and install the LogMeIn client software on any computer you wish to remotely access from an Android device.? The client software to download is LogMeIn Free or Pro. Both are simple point-and-click installations. I easily installed LogMeIn Free on both a Windows 7 laptop and a Windows Server 2008 R2 box.

When you install LogMeIn host software on a PC or Mac you are adding that computer to your LogMeIn account. Entering the same LogMeIn account username and password on both the host machine and the Android device, creates a secure connection between the hosts and the Android device.

Businesses needing to remotely install hosts to a multitude of PC or Mac clients would have to upgrade to LogMeIn Central which supports mass deployment.

Usage
After installing the client on the hosts and logging in with the account information on the host machines and on the app, I fired up LogMeIn on my Droid 2. I immediately saw the computer names of the machines with the host software installed. They were listed under a? pre-configured "Default " group listing.

To remotely connect to a host, users must enter in that machine's login credentials. Thankfully, you can check a box to store those credentials, although that may not be a bright idea for high-security machines.

The polish of LogMeIn Ingnition is apparent when compared to a cheaper remote access app like Jump Desktop. With Jump Desktop, I found the documentation on how to navigate the touch screen when remotely connected to a host did not jibe with how the actual navigation worked with some gestures.

LogMeIn, in contrast, displays several hints just before connecting to a host: "pinch to zoom in and out," "one finger to pan," "double-click and slide to drag," and so on. The instructions were spot on for working within my host connection. Re-sizing screens, zooming, double-clicks and right-clicks all responded well in my remote sessions, although at one point, while connected to my Windows 7 host, the LogMeIn app froze and stopped responding to my touch gestures.

Another great feature of LogMeIn lacking in other remote apps targeted more to consumers is the ability to throw a Ctrl-Alt-Del command to a host. This is really handy, especially when remotely connecting to servers; you may want to switch user accounts without having to reboot the entire server.? You can also perform a remote Alt-Tab for quick switching between apps.

Text copy and paste between host and device is supported, although selecting an area of text to copy in a remote session requires an abnormal level of touch precision and heaps of patience. I find it far easier to use the right-click context menu to perform a "Select All" from the host's app and then paste into my device's app and deleting any unwanted text after pasting.? Copying and pasting images and files between host and device are currently not supported.

LogMeIn Ignition's Audio streaming works very well. I was able to stream music files stored on my laptop to my Droid 2. It's possible to stream video as well, although unless both the device and host are connected to high-speed broadband, probably not worth the effort due to latency issues.

The various settings options such as controlling network speed, screen resolution, sound quality and keyboard locking gives users a way to customize remote sessions according to needs and like. One really important setting is configuring the app to always prompt before exiting a session, saving a user from accidently logging off and having to re-login all over again.

Another LogMeIn Hit
LogMeIn Ignition for Android delivers a secured and robust remote access experience from an Android device. The version for Android still needs to play catch-up with the version for iPad, which supports offline local file access. However, with the wide array of Android devices it's not surprising that such a feature might be easier to develop for a uniform platform like the iPad and might take some time to get to work on all of the Android offerings.

Still, LogMeIn Ignition is one of the best remote access solutions for Android and clearly the choice for professional use. If you only need simple access to home machines, the $30 price may not make it worth a download from Android Market. However, those requiring safe, reliable access from Android devices, in particular, access to business machines, would be well served by this app.

Teen in Craigslist case looks dazed in court (AP)

CALDWELL, Ohio ? A teen accused of murder made his first public court appearance Tuesday on charges he was part of a deadly robbery team that lured victims with a phony job ad, appearing dazed as a judge postponed a hearing on whether he should be tried as an adult.

The 16-year-old boy appeared briefly in a courtroom in Noble County. A juvenile judge put off the hearing because the boy's father, who wasn't present, hadn't received proper notice of new charges filed last week. The next hearing will probably happen in a couple of weeks, the judge said.

The Akron teenager faces juvenile charges of aggravated murder, complicity to aggravated murder, attempted murder and complicity to attempted murder in the death of one man and the shooting of another. He is a junior at Stow Munroe City Schools, about 40 miles southeast of Cleveland, and is being held at a juvenile detention center in Muskingum County.

The boy wore sneakers, dark slacks, a shirt and a rain jacket as he was led into court with his hands cuffed in front of him, appearing slightly stunned. He didn't speak during the hearing or afterward as police hustled him into a police car.

His mother sat on a bench directly behind him during the short hearing, rocking back and forth and appearing on the verge of tears. She left the courthouse hurriedly and gave only a few fleeting comments as she walked briskly to a black pickup across the street.

"We're praying for the families and the victims," she said to reporters. After she got into the passenger seat, she rolled the window down and said, "God bless you all. Do the right thing. Get the truth."

Authorities say the teenager was involved in a scheme in which applicants answering a Craigslist ad for a phony job at a nonexistent cattle ranch in Noble County, 90 miles south of Akron in rural southeastern Ohio, were robbed, then killed. Authorities say they have connected two bodies to the scheme and identified one other man who was shot but escaped.

The teen was questioned by the FBI and arrested in mid-November several days after Scott Davis, of South Carolina, said was shot in the arm and escaped after he answered the ad.

The body of Norfolk, Va., resident David Pauley, 51, was also found on the Noble County property, owned by a coal company and often leased to hunters. Authorities say Pauley was killed Oct. 23.

Timothy Kern, 47, of Massillon, was found buried Friday near an Akron-area shopping mall. He had been shot in the head.

A third body also found Friday was that of a man who was killed by a gunshot to the head, the coroner in Noble County said Tuesday. Authorities haven't said whether that body is linked to the scheme but say it's suspected the body is that of a man named Ralph Geiger.

Officials did not explain how they arrived at the conclusion or give any other details about the man.

The complaint against the boy says he participated in the alleged crimes with Richard Beasley, 52, of Akron, a man said to have acted as his mentor.

He was awaiting trial on prostitution and drug charges when authorities took him into custody this month, and police have said a halfway house he ran in Akron was a front for prostitution.

Rhonda Kotnik, an attorney for Beasley on the drug and prostitution charges, said Tuesday that she's still gathering information, with hearings scheduled later this week.

She said she isn't representing Beasley in anything involving the Craigslist case and points out he hasn't been charged in that. She said she assumes the juvenile has been cooperating with police, which is common in such cases.

Noble County Judge John Nau has issued a gag order prohibiting lawyers from discussing the case, a move he defended Tuesday, saying he's trying to ensure a fair trial in a sparsely populated county.

"It may not even be tried here, but I'm not sure it won't, so I prepare for the possibility that it might," he said.

The Associated Press generally does not identify juvenile suspects and is not naming the teenager or his mother.

Egypt frees detained American University students: family (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) ? The three American students arrested on suspicion of throwing gasoline bombs this week during the protests in Egypt were freed on Friday, a family member and a representative of the students said.

The students -- Derrik Sweeney, 19, of Georgetown University, Gregory Porter, 19, of Drexel University, and Luke Gates, 21, of Indiana University -- were detained during protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square demanding an end to military rule ahead of upcoming parliamentary elections.

The three have been officially released and authorities are escorting them to the airport where they will wait for transport home, Derrik Sweeney's mother, Joy Sweeney, said.

"Oh my goodness, I'll be ecstatic once my son gets on that flight -- I won't be able to contain myself," Sweeney said. "Once he is on that plane and I know he is headed home out of Egypt I will be truly happy."

Egypt's state television cited an Interior Ministry official as saying the three had been detained after they threw gasoline bombs at police protecting the Interior Ministry.

The students, who were studying abroad at the American University in Cairo, were expected to be released on Thursday after Egyptian authorities did not appeal a judge's release order. Their release was delayed for administrative reasons.

Indiana University spokesman Mark Land, who is in close contact with Gates' family, said: "The last administrative hurdles have been cleared or are very close to being cleared and it looks like all three will be leaving Egypt in the next 24 hours."

Land said Gates's father had said the student "steadfastly denies that he did anything wrong" and was fine physically but anxious to return home.

As for what her son was doing at the protests, Sweeney said, "He wanted to go there to observe the Egyptian culture and to be with them."

Protesters accuse the military of clinging to power since it took over when an uprising toppled President Hosni Mubarak on February 11. The past week of street battles between demonstrators and police have claimed more than 40 lives.
