Netanyahu to speak on Iran at U.N. General Assembly

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday he would speak out about the dangers of Iran's nuclear program in an address next month to the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

It was not immediately known if Netanyahu would meet U.S. President Barack Obama during his September 27-30 visit. The two leaders last met in March at the White House.

In a statement, Netanyahu said that at the assembly's annual general debate he would "tell the nations of the world in a clear voice the truth about the terror regime of Iran which represents the greatest threat to world peace".

Recent rhetoric by Israeli leaders cautioning that time is running out to stop what they say is an Iranian quest for nuclear weapons has raised international concern over possible Israeli military action. The United States has urged Israel to give diplomacy and international sanctions more time to work.

Israel is widely assumed to be the only nuclear-armed power in the Middle East, and Iran insists its atomic work is solely for peaceful purposes, which Tehran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reiterated at a conference on Thursday.

Israel strongly condemned Khamenei's strong criticism of the Jewish state uttered at the same meeting of the Non-Alignment Movement, in which he called Israelis "ferocious Zionist wolves" in how they treat the Palestinians.

"Today in Teheran we once again heard hatred and vilification for the Jewish state. The Iranian regime calls for the annihilation of Israel, it oppresses its own citizens, it's part of the murder going on in Syria and its building an atomic bomb," Regev told reporters.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman slammed the anti-Israeli rhetoric in Tehran as "a march of folly such as we have not seen since the 1930s", alluding to anti-Semitic propaganda by the Nazis who killed six million Jews during World War Two.

98-year-old message in bottle sets world record

(AP) ? It was scooped up from the sea after 98 years, and now officials say a message in a bottle discovered in Scotland has set a world record.

Fisherman Andrew Leaper found the bottle? released in 1914 ? in his nets in April while sailing east of the Shetland Islands, which lie off Scotland's northern coast.

Guinness World Records confirmed Thursday the find is the oldest message in a bottle ever recovered, beating a previous record by five years.

It was released in a batch of 1,890 bottles in a government experiment to map the undercurrents of the seas around Scotland.

Inside each bottle, a postcard asks the finder to record details of the discovery and promises a reward of a sixpence. Unfortunately for Leaper, the coin no longer exists.

Ex-Thai PM in court over 'Red Shirt' protest deaths

Former Thai prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva testified in court on Thursday for the first time in connection with dozens of protest deaths in 2010, saying the authorities had tried to avoid loss of life.

More than 90 people, mostly civilians, were killed and nearly 1,900 were wounded in street clashes and a military crackdown on the opposition rallies, which drew about 100,000 "Red Shirt" demonstrators at their peak.

Abhisit, who is now opposition leader, told an inquest at the Bangkok Criminal Court into the death of a taxi driver during the political violence that the authorities were attempting to reclaim areas occupied by demonstrators.

"I repeated to officials that all actions must avoid any losses (of life)," he said, adding that a series of grenade attacks were caused by militants armed with M79 launchers.

Abhisit and his former deputy Suthep Thaugsuban on Monday attended the Justice Ministry's Department of Special Investigation for several hours of questioning about the events.

Observers believe the pair -- who were already questioned by the police as witnesses in December 2011 -- could face prosecution.

Thailand now has a new government allied to the Red Shirts' hero, fugitive former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, whose sister Yingluck is prime minister.

Thaksin was toppled by royalist generals in a 2006 coup that unleashed years of street protests by the pro-Thaksin Red Shirts and the rival Yellow Shirts, who claim allegiance to the throne.

Abhisit's government invoked emergency rule to deal with the Red Shirt rallies in early 2010, giving broad powers to the military, which deployed thousands of troops in the capital.

New York-based Human Rights Watch has accused the army of using "excessive and unnecessary lethal force" in the crackdown.

Suthep, who headed the government centre set up to deal with the Red Shirt protests, told the same court that he had not received any reports of deaths caused by the authorities.

A ruling is expected on September 17 in the case of the taxi driver, the first in a series of inquests to establish the circumstances of the protest deaths.

Israeli archeologists find rare stone age figures

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's Antiquities Authority says archeologists have unearthed two 9,500-year-old figurines near Jerusalem that help shed light on religion and society during the stone age.

It says archaeologists unearthed the two rare figurines last week in Tel Motza between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv during a dig ahead of the expansion of a major highway in the area.

One of the objects is shaped like a ram and made of limestone. The other depicts an ox and is made of dolomite. Both are 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) long.

Wednesday's statement says the figurines could have been either good luck hunting icons or a representation of the animal's domestication.

Cueto wins ML-best 17th, Reds top Diamondbacks 5-2

PHOENIX (AP) ? Johnny Cueto leads the majors in wins and has his sights set even higher.

Cueto scattered four hits over seven innings for his 17th victory and the Cincinnati Reds beat the slumping Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2 on Tuesday night.

"All I can promise is to try and keep going because I want to win 20 games," Cueto said through a translator. "I felt better as the game went on. I was able to gather more strength and continue."

Cueto (17-4) gave up two runs, struck out one and walked five for his eighth victory in nine decisions. The right-hander lowered his NL-leading ERA to 2.48.

"He's feeling it every time he goes out there," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.

Ryan Hanigan hit a two-run single and Todd Frazier added a two-run triple for the Reds, who won for the third time in four games and stretched their lead in the NL Central to seven games over St. Louis.

Jonathan Broxton pitched the eighth and Aroldis Chapman closed it out for his 33rd save and 25th straight, tied with Texas reliever Joe Nathan for the longest active streak in the majors.

Wade Miley (14-9) allowed three runs and seven hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out five for the Diamondbacks, who have lost five straight and seven of nine.

"The first couple of innings everything was up," Miley said. "I was able to make the adjustment, but it didn't work out."

Arizona opened a 1-0 lead in the first when Gerardo Parra doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Kubel.

But the Reds rallied in the second and flipped the momentum with a long at-bat.

Frazier led off the inning with a single and Miley got ahead of Scott Rolen 1-2. Rolen then fouled off two pitches, took a ball, fouled off two more, took a third ball and fouled off five pitches in a row before drawing a 15-pitch walk.

"I'd have rather singled on the first pitch," Rolen said.

Baker thought the battle affected Arizona's rookie left-hander.

"That took a whole inning out of him," Baker said. "Foul off a pitch, foul off a pitch ? he was trying everything. That takes a lot out of a pitcher."

Chris Heisey singled to load the bases and Frazier scored on a wild pitch before Hanigan lined a two-run single to center for a 3-1 lead.

John McDonald reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double to left by Parra in the fifth to pull the Diamondbacks to 3-2.

Frazier tripled home Brandon Phillips and Ryan Ludwick in the eighth against Matt Lindstrom, who was making his Arizona debut after being traded from Baltimore for Joe Saunders on Sunday.

"We were just up the one run so that little cushion was helpful," Frazier said.

NOTES: Phillips stole second in the eighth, his 11th stolen base in 12 attempts. ... Miley needed 54 pitches to get through the first two innings but threw only 53 over his final five. ... Reds RHP Mat Latos (10-4) will look to bounce back from a rough outing when he pitches Wednesday against LHP Patrick Corbin (5-5). Latos allowed seven runs and nine hits Friday against St. Louis for his first loss since July 18. Corbin will be the third straight rookie the Diamondbacks send to the mound.

The Pancake Challenge Part Four - FRUGAL FITNESS

Contributed By Marissa Bognanno, Professional Chef? and Author of The Boot Blog
You guys. It?s a whole new ball game now. You know why? Because buttermilk changes everything. Who knew that a little curdled milk could make a pancake taste so good? Granted, these cakes were on the flat side, but the flavor was smooth and buttery and had me going back for more (A.K.A stealing from Manu?s plate). Do you remember the opening scene of Charlotte?s Web, the cartoon movie? When the family is eating pancakes and they?re talking about giving Wilbur a ?buttermilk bath?? Well, they keep saying ?buddahmilk, buddahmilk, buddahmilk? and when I was little I imagined vats of milk and butter swirling around with the pig in there, all happy and soaking up the creaminess. (That has nothing to do with the pancakes, I just wanted to make sure we were all on the same page regarding the beauty of buttermilk.)Pancake recipe: adapted from 101 Cookbooks with my own little twist.

Taste: Buttery, sweet and smooth.

Texture: Very elastic and chewy.

Esthetics: Flat, not the prettiest looking.

Manageability: Easy to put together, but since the batter is loose, they can burn easily.

[Manu, in his pjs, helping with the photo shoot!]

Buttermilk Pancakes with Jam Syrup

1 cup flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 cup sugar (less if desired)

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup buttermilk (to make your own, add 1 tablespoon vinegar to 1 cup milk and let sit 10 minutes)

1 egg

1 tablespoon melted butter

2 ample tablespoons fruit jam

?

Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt. In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, egg and melted butter and add that slowly to the flour mixture. Don?t overmix, or else the pancakes will become dense. It will be lumpy, don?t worry. Ladle the batter onto the hot buttered skillet in 1/4-cup increments. Wait for the bubbles to appear before flipping. If pancakes start to stick, add a bit more butter to the skillet. To make the jam syrup, add the fruit jam to the hot skillet when the pancakes are done cooking along with 1/4 cup of water. Whisk and let it reduce, it will take a few minutes.

This challenge has been so fun and I'd like to think that I'm becoming somewhat of a pancake connoisseur. :) The other great thing about it is that I'm really starting to understand the chemistry behind baking - something that I've never been able to get the hang of! So let me ask you, if you could do a recipe challenge, testing out all different methods to making one dish, what would it be?

Reddit is getting a fundraising button

5 hrs.

Being ?the front page of the Internet? comes with power, and Redditors have often, if not a bit spontaneously, channeled that power for fundraising.

Among their good deeds: giving a bullied senior citizen bus monitor a $700,000 vacation budget, scrounging up $31,000 overnight to help a three-year-old who needed a bone marrow transplant, and contributing more than $180,000 to Haiti earthquake relief efforts.

Now, for the first time, Reddit users will be able to execute some of these fundraisers within Reddit-branded pages.

Starting today, managers of the site's topic pages, or Subreddits, can opt to accept donations to specific nonprofits by installing new "Donate" buttons on their Subreddit pages. The TwoXChromosomes Subreddit, for instance, will add a button to support She's the First, an organization that supports girls' education in the developing world.

The buttons and the donation system they're attached to, Reddit Donate, were developed by payment startup Dwolla in partnership with another payment startup called Stripe. It will launch with 12 nonprofit partners, including Kiva, Charity: Water, and DonorsChoose.?

Many Subreddits are already active fundraisers. The atheism Subreddit, for instance, helped raise more than $200,000 for Doctors Without Boarders by directing traffic to a third-party fundraising page.

Without a Reddit tool for accepting donations, most fundraising Redditors have, like the athiest group, pointed each other to crowd funding sites such as Indiegogo, independent funding sites, and custom landing pages on charities' websites to contribute.

At times it can be unclear, however, where the money is actually going. Money raised for the bullied bus monitor's vacation, for instance, was collected on an Indiegogo page that was not set up in her name, but a Redditor's name. If a less scrupulous person had created the page, the story may have lost its happy ending.

?We want to protect our community, and for it to know that if it donates $100, that it's going to the right person and not to various fees,? Erik Martin, the general manager of Reddit, tells Fast Company.

Dwolla removes credit card numbers from transactions--and with them a handful of third-party financial-service providers?-and thus is able to charge an impressively low fee of $.25 for transactions more than $10 (transactions involving less than that are free). Money travels directly from donors' bank accounts to nonprofits' bank accounts. Stripe keeps the credit card in the process and charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction.?

Reddit has taken other steps to support charitable efforts initiated in its site, but none so significant.

Earlier this month, the site named Crowdtilt its official fundraising partner. A newly-launched startup, Crowdtilt enables anyone to raise money for any kind of project, and it promised Reddit to wave fees and verify that donated money ends up where it is intended.

It's difficult to verify how organizations that aren't registered nonprofits are spending their money, so the Dwolla and Stripe button only applies to nonprofit partners for now. That leaves out the individual-specific causes Reddit is famous for supporting.

Ben Milne, the CEO of Dwolla, tells Fast Company that if Redditors embrace it, there's likely room for the project to evolve. For now, the new feature formalizes a giving habit that has already become part of Reddit's reputation.

?It?s just like anyone could always raise money for their project," says Milne, "but it got way easier when Kickstarter launched.??

A CUP OF JO: Motherhood Mondays: What's the best age gap ...

I've noticed something interesting about people...

Now and again, I'll ask a friend, "Ideally, how many years apart would you want to have kids?" And the funny thing is, their answer is almost always the same as the age gap between their own siblings and themselves, back when they were growing up.

Personally, I have a twin sister and a brother who is three years younger. And voila, now that Toby is three-years-minus-nine-months, I'm itching to have a second baby. I think three years feels like a great age gap: you're close enough in age to play together, and you'll cross over in middle school and high school, but you're not so close that your parents will go nuts having two teeny guys in diapers at the same time. :)

But obviously, lots of different age gaps can work beautifully. So, I'm really curious: How far apart would you want to have kids? What's your sibling age gap? Do they match? Or are you an only child? I'd LOVE to hear...

(AP) ? Kicker Billy Cundiff was cut Sunday by the Baltimore Ravens, who decided to keep rookie Justin Tucker instead of the former Pro Bowl star.

Tucker went 5 for 5 on field goal tries during Baltimore's first three preseason games and showed more leg strength than the 32-year-old Cundiff. Tucker made two field goals of 50 yards or longer; Cundiff was 1 for 6 last year from that distance.

Tucker also comes at a cheaper price.

Cundiff's place on the roster appeared in peril after coach John Harbaugh used Tucker for all the placekicking chores in Thursday night's preseason win over Jacksonville.

Tucker was invited to camp as an undrafted free agent to challenge Cundiff, who made the Pro Bowl in 2010 but last season missed a potential game-tying, 32-yarder against New England in the waning seconds of the AFC title game.

Harbaugh liked the way Cundiff rebounded from the pivotal miss, but decided Tucker was simply the better choice for Baltimore in 2012.

"These decisions are never easy, and this one was difficult for all of us," Harbaugh said. "Billy had a great camp, the best he has had with us. He showed, like he always has, a toughness and an ability to come back and be a top flight NFL kicker."

If Cundiff is to continue his career in the NFL, it will likely be with another team.

After Thursday's game against the Jaguars, Cundiff insisted he had done everything possible to put that miss against the Patriots behind him.

"Let's be honest, I feel like I've been through enough," he said. "There's not a single thing that I think somebody can trap me that I'm not prepared for. So, I know my confidence has been high, I know when I came into training camp a lot of people asked me where my head was at and kind of questioned whether I'd be able to even kick. Whatever the case may be, I felt like I proved continually throughout training camp that I came in prepared. And regardless of what's thrown at me, what the situation is, I feel like I'm ready to kick."

Tucker, a standout at Texas, believes he's become an even better kicker during training camp.

"To the naked eye, it doesn't look like I've made a lot of changes, but I've made a complete transformation from the kicker I was in college to the kicker I am today," he said Thursday. "I feel like I'm kicking the best I ever kicked."

Pediatricians' group shifts in favor of circumcision

The American Academy of Pediatrics has shifted its official position on the contentious issue of infant circumcision, stating Monday that the medical benefits of the procedure for baby boys outweigh the small risks.

In its first new policy statement on the issue since 1999, the academy said that circumcision reduced risks of urinary tract infections in infants and of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases later in life ? and that the complications associated with the procedure were infrequent and mostly minor.

But the physicians' group stopped short of recommending the sometimes controversial practice for all newborn boys, urging parents to be guided by their religious, ethical and cultural practices in addition to the science.

"This is a decision parents should make based on what they think is most important for their child's welfare," said Dr. Douglas Diekema, a pediatric emergency specialist and bioethicist at Seattle Children's Hospital who was a member of the task force. "The [medical] benefit may not be so compelling when it's stacked up against other considerations."

The academy reexamines its policies on a regular basis, Diekema said. In 2005, it reaffirmed the 1999 guidelines, which acknowledged some potential health benefits of removing the foreskin of the penis but said that they did not outweigh risks.

But during the most recent review it became "pretty clear that there had been a lot of scientific literature that had not been reflected in 1999, and it was time for a revision," he said.

The task force spent more than three years examining 1,031 peer-reviewed articles published between 1995 and 2010. The studies dealt with various aspects of male circumcision, including medical benefits, risks and complications; costs; cultural and religious influences; and effects on sexual function.

Some of the evidence hadn't changed much since the earlier analysis, Diekema said, including results indicating that risks associated with infant circumcision were low.

But new data supporting the medical benefits were compelling, he added.

Three randomized controlled trials from Africa, for example, showed that circumcision reduced men's risk of contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Additional research supported those findings.

Studies also linked circumcision to reduced risk of other sexually transmitted diseases, including herpes, syphilis and human papillomavirus, which is linked to penile cancer in men and cervical cancer in women.

The new policy is "a little bit of a stronger statement about the benefits," said Diekema, who characterized the change as "a difference in tone more than anything."

Experts said that most physicians were already aware of the growing evidence in favor of circumcision and that the new guidelines wouldn't change much in doctors' offices.

"From the perspective of most pediatricians, this is business as usual," said Dr. Carlos Lerner, medical director of UCLA Children's Health Center.

Circumcision has fallen out of favor with American parents over the last few decades, with rates falling from about 80% in the 1970s and 1980s to below 55% in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Some object to the procedure on the grounds that it is irreversible and performed without the patient's consent. Opponents also argue that it is traumatic for the infant and impairs later sexual function, though the technical report accompanying the policy noted that the task force did not find evidence supporting that belief.

Other parents may decide against circumcision because they can't afford it. Medicaid programs in 18 states ? including California ? as well as some health insurance companies have stopped paying for the procedure. Some people trace those decisions to the academy's 1999 guidelines stating that circumcision is not necessary, Diekema said.

The new policy could bring about a shift in affordability. The guidelines now make plain that the benefits of circumcision are great enough to "justify access to this procedure for families choosing it and to warrant third-party payment for circumcision of male newborns."

A study published last week in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine attempted to tally the costs involved. Researchers calculated that if circumcision rates remained at current levels, the lifetime healthcare costs for all babies born in a calendar year would be about $211 million higher than if rates were the same as in years past.

The academy's new policy urges physicians to inform parents "in a nonbiased manner" of all the benefits and risks of circumcision; to make sure parents understand that it is an elective procedure; and to teach new parents how to care for their newborn's penis, whether it is circumcised or not.

The guidelines also emphasize that sterile techniques and effective pain management should always be provided.

Compound discovered that boosts effect of vaccines against HIV and flu

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Oxford University scientists have discovered a compound that greatly boosts the effect of vaccines against viruses like flu, HIV and herpes in mice.

An 'adjuvant' is a substance added to a vaccine to enhance the immune response and offer better protection against infection.

The Oxford University team, along with Swedish and US colleagues, have shown that a type of polymer called polyethyleneimine (PEI) is a potent adjuvant for test vaccines against HIV, flu and herpes when given in mice.

The researchers were part-funded by the UK Medical Research Council and report their findings in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

Mice given a single dose of a flu vaccine including PEI via a nasal droplet were completely protected against a lethal dose of flu. This was a marked improvement over mice given the flu vaccine without an adjuvant or in formulations with other adjuvants.

The Oxford researchers now intend to test the PEI adjuvant in ferrets, a better animal model for studying flu. They also want to understand how long the protection lasts for. It is likely to be a couple of years before a flu vaccine using the adjuvant could be tested in clinical trials in humans, the researchers say.

'Gaining complete protection against flu from just one immunisation is pretty unheard of, even in a study in mice,' says Professor Quentin Sattentau of the Dunn School of Pathology at Oxford University, who led the work. 'This gives us confidence that PEI has the potential to be a potent adjuvant for vaccines against viruses like flu or HIV, though there are many steps ahead if it is ever to be used in humans.'

HIV, flu and herpes are some of the most difficult targets to develop vaccines against. HIV and flu viruses are able to change and evolve to escape immune responses stimulated by vaccines. There aren't any effective vaccines against HIV and herpes as yet, and the flu vaccine needs reformulating each year and doesn't offer complete protection to everyone who receives it. Finding better adjuvants could help in developing more effective vaccines against these diseases.

Most vaccines include an adjuvant. The main ingredient of the vaccine -- whether it is a dead or disabled pathogen, or just a part of the virus or bacteria causing the disease -- primes the body's immune system so it knows what to attack in case of infection. But the adjuvant is needed as well to stimulate this process.

While the need for adjuvants in vaccines has been recognised for nearly 100 years, the way adjuvants work has only recently been understood. The result has been that only a small set of adjuvants is used in current vaccines, often for historical reasons.

The most common adjuvant by far is alum, an aluminium-containing compound that has been given in many different vaccines worldwide for decades. However, alum is not the most potent adjuvant for many vaccine designs.

'There is a need to develop new adjuvants to get the most appropriate immune response from vaccines,' says Professor Sattentau, who is also a James Martin Senior Fellow at the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford.

The Oxford University team found that PEI, a standard polymer often used in genetic and cell biology, has strong adjuvant activity.

When included in a vaccine with a protein from HIV, flu or herpes virus, mice subsequently mounted a strong immune response against that virus. The immune response was stronger than with other adjuvants that are currently being investigated.

The team also showed that PEI is a potent adjuvant in rabbits, showing the effect is not just specific to mice and could be general.

Another potential advantage of PEI is that it works well as an adjuvant for 'mucosal vaccines'. These vaccines are taken up the nose or in the mouth and absorbed through the mucus-lined tissues there, getting rid of any pain and anxiety from a needle. Mucosal vaccines may also be better in some ways as mucosal tissues are the sites of infection for these diseases (airways for respiratory diseases, genital mucosa for HIV and herpes).

Professor Sattentau suggests that: 'In the best of all possible worlds, you could imagine people would have one dose of flu vaccine that they'd just sniff up their nose or put under their tongue. And that would be it: no injections and they'd be protected from flu for a number of years.

'It's just a vision for the future at the moment, but this promising adjuvant suggests it is a vision that is at least possible.'

How To Lose Weight With The Right Nutrition : Premier Diet and ...

Posted by haleyjonas on Saturday, August 25, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

When it comes to the topic of nutrition, many people often think of boring salads that include iceberg lettuce and hothouse tomatoes. However, eating a healthy, nutritious diet can actually be a very tasty experience. In reality, you can gain an entirely new outlook on food when you explore nutrition. Try to look at the food that you eat as nourishment by applying these simple tricks to help achieve a healthier body.

One thing to consider to improve your nutritional intake is to only eat whole grains. In the past, humans ate only beans, nuts, fruits, vegetables and meat. Processed grains haven?t been around as long, and we can live without them. You will definitely notice a difference in your body if you periodically stay away from enriched wheat flour and other unnatural grain products.

TIP! There are many readily available exercise products to help you get and stay in shape in the comfort of your own home. These products make it easier for you to achieve your goal of having a great body.

Do not focus on the next sweet treat. Do not eat more than a few desserts a week.

Get plenty of calcium in your diet. Foods that are high in calcium include beans, nuts, dairy products, and darker colored vegetables. Bone and teeth strength are among the many benefits of consuming calcium. Osteoporosis is a brittle bone disease caused by lack of calcium in your diet. Osteoporosis is an extremely painful process that slowly causes your bones to be soft and brittle.

TIP! Eat brightly colored foods! Different colored vegetables and fruits often offer different nutritional benefits. Try and get at least one serving of fruits and vegetables with each meal.

Just because you are eating healthy foods does not mean that you can stop monitoring how much you eat. Knowing how much food you can eat is key to a successful weight loss plan. Keep in mind that any time you add more food to your plate, you are increasing your caloric intake.

Trade your white flour products for products made with whole grains. Stick with protein and fiber-rich whole wheat and whole grains, instead of refined grains. Whole grains lower cholesterol levels and digest slowly, making a person feel full longer than white flour products. You want to see the word ?whole? on the label.

TIP! Add Greek yogurt to your diet; it is a great source of protein. Many recipes that call for sour cream can use non-fat Greek yogurt instead.

Consider using just the egg white when you are making an omelet or scrambled eggs. The whites of eggs are much better than the yolk. Consider two egg whites a proper replacement for every whole egg you would normally use.

For optimal nutrition, get rid of some common nasties in your diet. Sugars can harm your health. Second, foods that have undergone a bleaching process, such as white breads or rice, do not have as many nutrients as their brown alternatives. Finally, there are trans and saturated fats which can have a bad effect on your heart and your cholesterol levels.

TIP! It?s important to get riboflavin in your diet. This is something that helps your body to turn carbohydrates, fat and protein into energy that your body uses to stay active.

Be aware of canned foods that add sodium to your diet. High sodium can lead to elevated blood pressure and possibly heart disease, so be diligent in checking the sodium levels listed on the product labeling. Processed meats are treated in a brining solution that is high in sodium to extend their shelf life, but be aware that they can take you over your daily maximum sodium allowance.

If you are diabetic, ask your doctor if you are allowed to have alcohol. Alcoholic beverages can lower blood sugar levels, which can be dangerous for diabetics.

TIP! To improve your diet right away, clear unhealthy junk food like candy, cookies, and soda out of your kitchen. Trade the unhealthy snacks for healthy ones like vegetables, fruits or low-fat microwave popcorn.

Tomatoes, bananas, beans and yams promote proper nutrition by supplying the body with potassium. Potassium will lower your blood pressure and help you avoid heart disease and other ailments, including diabetes. There is also a lot of potassium in certain dairy items, including milk and yogurt.

The number five is key to a good diet. Ideally, you should have at least five portions of fresh produce daily. While five servings seems like a lot, realize that each serving is likely smaller than you would think. As an example, a serving size for most fruits is just half a cup.

TIP! Eggs have a lot of protein and they will help you keep up with a diet that is rich in nutrients. By eating egg whites and skipping the yolk, you will be eating less cholesterol and fat.

You need to make time and remain motivated for diets and fitness plans to work. These two factors determine the effectiveness of your program. Motivation will make you want to stick with your workout routine. In turn, you will be inspired to take out some time to accomplish it. You should have a set time for exercising each day. Aim for a time that will work every day, and make sure that you do a variety of exercises that are not only good for weight loss but that are also enjoyable.

Nutrition is important for overall physical and mental health. If your body lacks vitamins you can become lethargic or depressed. By keeping track of what you eat on a regular basis, you will be able to avoid a lot of complications in your physical and mental health.

TIP! It?s important to look closely at food labels. Some foods which are labeled ?reduced-fat? can be unhealthy in other ways, like containing excessive salt or sugar.

Comfort Foods

Anyone who is trying to stay healthy should drink enough water. Hydration is very important, especially considering that we are essentially made of water. It?s important to drink as much water as possible throughout your day, with eight glasses being your goal.

TIP! Eating fresh fruit is a healthier choice than consuming fruit juice. Fruit juice is usually artificially sweetened, while fresh fruit is 100% natural.

Eating right can be a Herculean challenge for many people. You may find it hard to resist the comfort foods you love in order to chose healthy foods instead. By changing your food choices and staying away from comfort foods, you will find that your body no longer craves them. Consistently eating this way will allow you to put the focus on nutrition, instead of engaging in emotionally-charged eating.

Avoid cold cereals that contain too much sugar to be a healthy breakfast. The fact is that your cereal may be hiding preservatives, trans and saturated fats and even harmful chemicals. A preferable option for breakfast is oatmeal.

TIP! Look more closely if a food is ?low fat? or ?trans fat-free.? Many products make up for the missing flavor of those fats with added sugar or other chemicals.

Before you eat packaged foods, you should carefully read the nutritional information provided on the label. Try to skip foods that contain more than 5 percent of fats, cholesterol, and sodium. These things, if eaten in excess, will greatly increase your likelihood of contracting serious diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and hypertension.

Some foods that you eat to help improve your health include nuts, fish, lean meats and low-fat milk. This type of diet plan is among the best ways to stay healthy.

TIP! Avoid choosing soda when you?re selecting a drink. The corn syrup and processed sugar that makes pop sweet is bad for your body in a number of ways.

Wheat Flour

Fiber has many health benefits. It helps with digestion, prevents diabetes, lowers the risk of heart disease and even helps prevent obesity. Soluble fiber will remove cholesterol and fat, keeping them from hurting your body. The amount of fiber recommended is 20 or more grams a day for women and at least 30 grams for men. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are all excellent sources of the fiber you need. If necessary, you can purchase fiber supplements at most grocery stores, pharmacies, and health food centers.

TIP! You can see this in your urine, the color will be dark yellow and it will have a strong odor. Excess hydration will show up as lighter color in urine.

Substitute small amounts of whole wheat flour for white flour when you bake. This will give your baked goods the higher nutritional content that comes with wheat flour. Wheat flour contains more nutrients, such as fiber, and is not processed.

Instead of always eating meat, at least two days per week you should have fish. You need Omega-3 fatty acids, found in most fish, for better blood and brain health. Try not too eat too much of fish that have high levels of mercury, like tuna.

TIP! People need to realize that highly milled grains are not as nutritious as their natural counterparts. When you take the hull out of the equation, you get rid of the health benefits.

Juicers can really help to give you the nutrients you need throughout the day. You can add to the overall nutrition and improve the taste of fruit juice by adding some vegetables to the mix. Liven up a carrot/apple juice combo with a little ginger. For a spicy kick, try adding a bit of jalapeno.

Your diet should contain a normal amount of selenium. You can preserve the elasticity of your skin, and slow down the aging process, with selenium?s antioxidant effects. Selenium can also neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals and protect the skin from sun damage. Many common food items contain high levels of selenium, including items like tuna, eggs, nuts and garlic.

Engage your child?s interest in different foods by checking out baking or cooking classes that may be available nearby. Exposing your child to different kinds of foods and how they are prepared will help him or her have an appreciation of other cultures.

As you can see, eating a balanced, nutritious diet is easy and fun. There is a lot of room for creativity in the world of food, so it is a wonderful way to enhance your quality of life without limiting yourself. These tips are only the beginning to a new, healthier you!

PFT: Ravens rookie fined $15,760 for hit on Hill

Kenny BrittAP

Receiver Kenny Britt may not be worried about whether he gets suspended by Commissioner Roger Goodell, but Britt?s employer is.

The Tennessee Titans have roster decisions to make, and they need to know whether Britt will be among the 53 players available to suit up and play.? As a result, John Glennon of the Tennessean reports that the Titans expect to hear something before August 31, the date on which the rosters must drop from 75 to 53.

?That will be something that about a week from now, we?ll know more,? coach Mike Munchak said Friday.

As we recently explained, a suspension would trigger an appeal period.? Britt would have three business days under the personal-conduct policy to initiate the process.? If suspended under the substance-abuse policy, Britt would have five days to appeal.? Then, a hearing would have to be scheduled and conducted and a decision would have to be made.? So even if Britt gets a suspension letter this week, there won?t be much of an opportunity to get the process concluded before Week One, when the Patriots come to town.

While Britt remains on the Physically Unable to Perform list due to a torn ACL that occurred last September, the team has said that he could participate in 10-to-15 snaps in the first regular-season game.

The delay possibly arises from the fact that the NFL doesn?t quite know what to do with Britt.? On one hand, his July DUI arrest was his eighth incident in three years.? On the other hand, it was his first DUI ? and the substance-abuse policy plainly states that the ordinary punishment for a first-offense DUI is a two-game fine, after the case is resolved with some attachment of guilt to the player.

Thus, any effort to suspend Britt via a straw-that-broke-the-camel?s-back theory under the personal-conduct policy would be undermined by the reality that the straw that is breaking the camera?s back doesn?t even fall within the confines of the personal-conduct policy.? Which means that the NFL could be inviting another lawsuit if the NFL tries to suspend Britt under the personal-conduct policy for something that falls under the substance-abuse policy.

Either way, it?s going to be difficult to finalize a suspension by Week One.? So when making their final roster cuts, the Titans should assume that, at least for the first game of the regular season, one of the 53-man roster spots will be devoted to Britt.

Palermo's chief and union leader may meet on strike

Palermo Villa Inc. CEO Giacomo Fallucca and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka are trying to set a time and place to meet to talk about union organizing efforts and the labor strike at the frozen pizza manufacturing plant in Milwaukee, a spokesman for Palermo's said Friday.

Fallucca wrote to Trumka last week asking for a meeting, saying, "There has been much misinformation communicated regarding Palermo's" after Trumka endorsed a national boycott of Palermo's Pizza and its major pizza customer, Costco.

Fallucca said he wanted to "reach out to you and discuss the real issues that Palermo's faces to allay your concerns."

Friday, Trumka said he "welcomes a dialogue" with Fallucca to discuss the company's recent actions in response to the union organizing efforts.

"I am encouraged by your willingness to discuss workers' desire for a voice on the job," Trumka said in a news release responding to Fallucca's letter. "It is only through open dialogue that management and labor can reach a just and fair resolution of workplace problems and I am happy to participate in opening such a dialogue."

Fallucca said he was willing to go to AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington, D.C., for a meeting. Palermo's director of marketing, Chris Dresselhuys, said Friday that discussions are under way with the union leader about setting a time and place for the meeting.

Meanwhile, Voces de la Frontera, which has been organizing the workers, said it will launch a "national day of action" Saturday at the Costco in Grafton asking the store to pull the Palermo/Kirkland pizza from its shelves. Rallies and informational pickets will also be held Saturday at 25 Costco stores in 15 cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle, Philadelphia, Houston and Miami.

Christine Neumann-Ortiz, the executive director of Voces, said Costco has not agreed to pull the Palermo's pizza.

About 80 to 100 production workers at Palermo's went on strike June 1 after workers said the company tried to thwart their efforts to form a union to discuss issues of pay, worker safety, promotion and discrimination.

The company has called the complaints "categorically false."

Further, Voces claims the company used an immigration audit at the company as a tactic to stop organizing efforts, again allegations the company denies.

A July date had been set for a union vote, but Voces filed numerous complaints with the National Labor Relations Board and the election was subsequently canceled. The charges include refusing to bargain with employees, retaliation and replacing striking workers.

Last week, Palermo's said it asked Voces to agree to a vote by employees on forming a union. But Neumann-Ortiz said there can be no election until the NLRB resolves the complaints.

Chael Sonnen, Chris Weidman volunteered to take UFC 151 fight with Jon Jones

The UFC decided to cancel UFC 151 after Jon Jones passed on replacement opponents when Dan Henderson had to pull out because of an injury. Two of those opponents spoke up after the news broke on the UFC 151 cancellation.

Chael Sonnen started a Twitter beef with Jones last week after Sonnen announced his move up to light heavyweight. Sonnen took to Twitter again on Thursday.

Sonnen wasn't the only one to offer to step up and fight a five-round, championship fight on Sept. 1. Middleweight Chris Weidman also offered to move up a weight class and take the fight. Weidman was thought to have earned a middleweight title shot, but current champion Anderson Silva will not be fighting again before the end of the year.

Weidman saw a second chance at a title and and called UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.

"I heard that Dan Henderson was hurt," Weidman said to MMA Fighting. "I said, 'Wow, I'm not getting the shot at 185, let me get Jon Jones, he's freaking awesome."

Instead, Jones will have an extra few weeks of preparation before a fight with Lyoto Machida at UFC 152.

93% The Queen of Versailles

Meet the Siegels, the subjects of a Sundance-winning documentary, The Queen of Versailles. David is a real estate magnate in his 60s. Jackie is his 40-something wife, a former model, and together they have eight children. It would be an understatement to call the Siegels rich. These people are stupid rich. These are people that have so much money they don't know what to do with it, which is why David and Jackie set out to build the biggest home in the nation. After the subprime mortgage flameout of 2008, the Siegels took a major hit in their resources. But not everyone sees worldwide economic disaster as a wake-up call. Some just keep on shopping. The Queen of Versailles is one captivating clinical study in overreaching. In the wake of the financial collapse, politicians were eager to lambaste the poor who bought mortgages they couldn't afford (the better to shield blame from their friends in the banking cabal). Let this film show you that even the super rich can have trouble living within their (enormous) means. I won't lie; part of the appeal of this documentary is the continual shock of the wasteful extravagance the Siegel clan called normal. How opulent was their lifestyle? Well their 26,000-square foot home only had 17 bathrooms, so you can see why the Siegels would feel the need to build the biggest home in the nation. This 90,000-square foot fortress was modeled after the actual French palace in Versailles, so you know, it's going to be modest. It was designed to have 30 bathrooms, 10 kitchens, a bowling alley, an ice-skating rink, and two movie theaters (for counter programming?). The large stain glass window itself cost $250,000. The total cost of the project: more or less $100 million. I repeatedly laughed to myself in disbelief at the untamed lavishness on display. I confess it's hard for me to put myself into this vapid mindset. I just see all hat money and think of all the better things it could have been spent on. How many children could be vaccinated with $100 million? How many people could have been bought out of slavery with that money? How many low-income students could have afforded college? The kicker, what really gets my ire, is that is was all unnecessary. The Siegel family already lived in a giant mansion. Did they have to live in a giant-er mansion? When is enough just enough?By the end of the movie you won't know whether to scorn the Siegels or feel sorry for them. I'm at a loss myself. There's a certain level of schadenfreude watching a riches-to-rags story, watching the wealthiest among us find their world of easy money come crumbling down. But then you start thinking what these people are going to do now without the luxury of wealth. The Siegel children are horrified when at one point dad declares they will likely have to go to college and, gasp, earn their own living. And if these kids have to fend for themselves, it doesn't take a genius to get a sense of what the future holds. At one point, the adopted niece discovers her pet lizard is dead. Jackie harangues her about not taking care of it. "No one takes me to the pet store!" the niece declares. "But why didn't you at least give him water?" Jackie reasonably asks. The niece responds dead-serious: "That wouldn't have made a difference." And these people are going to have to fend for themselves! The horror that waits. The entire family has been wrapped up in a cocoon of wealth, insulated from the real world, and now has no real sense of how to navigate this new, blunt reality. Adding to the sadness is the dawning realization that David Siegel cannot stand his wife. Jackie is wife number three, and a former pageant winner/model, so we all know what stood out to the older businessman. Even his kids know. Late in the film, when the weight of creditors bears down on him, David sequesters himself in his private room, shows no interest in his wife or his children, and confides to his dog that the two of them could just run away together. With the comforts of wealth stripped away, and Jackie reaching, gasp, middle age, it becomes readily apparent that David's waning affection is not going to reverse. But the movie belongs to Jackie, the titular queen, and she is easily the most fascinating figure in the film. It's easy to dismiss the bleach-blonde woman with huge fake breasts and a shiny, fake life of glamor. Is she a ditz? She got a degree in computer engineering. Impressive. Is she a gold digger? She cannot help herself when it comes to buying, whether it's at Southerby's or Wal-Mart. Is she even a good mother? She does admit that she would not have had nearly as many children if it weren't for the ever-present nannies. What I saw was a woman who knew she could taste the good life and then became afraid of being kicked to the curb. David is happy to fund her personal projects and let her splurge on posh buys, but for how long? Her body, impressive though top-heavy, is aging, and her model looks are naturally fading into a comfortable middle age. Such is life. However, you can tell that Jackie is terrified. Mountains of money acted like a buffer between her and her husband. That's gone now. He keeps joking that when Jackie gets old he's going to dump her for two twenty-year-olds. Even when the family is downsizing, Jackie makes sure to fit in her beauty stops (botox, tanning, etc.). Some might charge the woman with being toxicly narcissistic, but I think that's too simple. Her looks are her meal ticket and now they are betraying her. She knows the type of man she married, and they both seem to be failing to live up to expectations. Now that the shiny distractions are removed, they have to live with one another as-is, and as-is doesn't really work for men of wealth and ego.Director Lauren Greenfield (Thin) spent three years documenting the Siegel clan. She must have done something right with her finished product since David Siegel filed a lawsuit against the movie and Greenfield. The suit argues the film damages David Siegel's credibility by positing that his company is on the verge of financial ruin. His company, Westgate Resorts, sold timeshares in the same kind of high-pressure sales tactics that lead to people buying things they cannot afford. After the 2008 meltdown, guess what? People couldn't afford their own homes let alone a vacation timeshare. When the bankers freeze the easy money, Siegel and his company cannot pay their bills and have to downsize, sell offices, and foreclose major properties, including their signature Vegas resort. It's hard to imagine that Greenfield went out of her way to portray a gloomy outlook on Siegel's company when the facts are pretty black and white. He lost his access to money and lost assets he couldn't afford any longer. The litigation just seems like desperate spin against the obvious and insurmountable. From a documentary standpoint, not all of the storylines and messages stick together. You can tell Greenfield wants to use the Siegel clan as an allegory for the American consumerist culture. See, the movie says, even the rich overreached too. But beyond the audience feeling superior to such careless individuals, I don't think this works. The movie never fails to be fascinating but almost in a car-crash sort of manner, as we vicariously lavish in the pornography of riches. Certainly Greenfield never condones the lifestyles of her subjects, not like the insipid, soul-deadening, vain Real Housewives reality franchise on Bravo (in a surprise to nobody, Bravo has snapped up the broadcast TV rights to Versailles). There's plenty of derisive laughter to be had throughout, but you do wish that Greenfield had pushed further. Comparing the Siegel's lives to their live-in nannies seems to be given superficial significance. These immigrant women bust their asses raising the Siegel brood and one of them literally lives in one of the kid's super sized dollhouses. She literally lives in a former dollhouse. Choke on that metaphor. Then there's a limo driver who's had to cut back to make ends meet, but really the stars of the film are Jackie and David. Too often the film seems caught up in the "look how disgustingly rich they are" direction. This is a compelling documentary, to be sure, but it can lapse into an extended Lifestyles of the Super Rich and Famous. David Siegel makes a very resonant observation in the film. "Everyone wants to be rich," he says. "If they can't be rich, they want to feel rich." Of course David Siegel's company made a hefty profit from making people feel rich at their resorts. Everyone wanted to partake in the same illusion, the same false belief that the good times were never going to end. The Queen of Versailles is alarming, fascinating, and beyond belief at several points (why do these people keep getting more pets they won't care for?). You'll feel a general sense of moral superiority but that's the movie's weakness as well. The super rich are characterized as extravagantly wasteful, and while this is a notion that will not break any headlines, the movie too often dips into schadenfreude that doesn't elevate the material. We're left with the sinking impression that this clan is stuck in their ways and ultimately doomed. Since the film's release, David Siegel has reclaimed his foreclosed super mansion, and now he's brought the asking price down to a more reasonable $65 million. It seems that you can lose millions and still not gain a lick of sense and perspective. Nate's Grade: B
