Healthy Optimism Will Get You Far

If you want to fly unaided, using only your hands and arms, no amount of positive thinking will allow you to do that flying. As a matter of fact, of course, if you stand on the top corner of a high building and spread your arms and hands and expect to fly when you jump off that building you will kill yourself.

On the other hand, healthy optimism will get you farther down the road of life than pessimism. Health and wealth are just two of the possibilities that may come your way when you hold a consistently positive attitude.

Studies have shown that people who are consistently affirmative in their attitude toward everything and everybody enjoy better health than those who do not. A whole craze has grown up around casting positive vibrations upon the Universe, expecting positive return on thoughts and feelings from the Universe.

Neither Too Hot Nor Too Cold

Healthy optimism, in my opinion, is somewhere between fatalistic pessimism and irresponsible optimism, sometimes called Pollyanna-ism. Fatalistic pessimism might be defined as believing that everything, all the time, will turn out poorly or badly. Irresponsible optimism might be defined as the attitude that everything all the time will turn out well or good. That one can fly unaided would be irresponsible optimism; that one can never fly in any way might be fatalistic pessimism.

Healthy optimism has got to be somewhere in between.

You Can Fly

Of course, you can fly ? in a plane or a giant kite or in the newer para-suits where you look like a flying squirrel. The person who set out to learn to fly, by holding a positive attitude, kept working and inventing until human flight become possible. Enter the Wright brothers and their flying machine.

So positive thought long held will produce results. Those results can be, literally, in any walk of life, through any occupation or avocation. Your life can be improved through healthy optimism.

How Do I Get One?

Simply said, you develop a positive attitude by developing a positive attitude. Yes, I know the former sentence sounds redundant. But is it really redundant? If your attitude is negative at this time, you?ve got to turn things around by turning your mental posture in a different direction.

You?ve got to see the virtuous and benevolent in everything and everybody. Yes, I know that is not easy in every case. Sometimes it is downright difficult when it comes to some people or some disasters.

Your atrocious boss may try to browbeat you into submission with his impossible demands and deadlines. The tornado that destroyed your home and took all your possessions is not easy to see as presenting opportunities to find the good in it.

A Foundation Is Necessary

To develop and keep healthy optimism you need a foundation upon which to build. You need a place where you may position your confidence that things will turn out, if not for the best, than better than first might meet the eye.

You find such a foundation in the meaning of life, which, I believe, is to be happy. You find that happiness by developing a genuine relationship with The All There Is. You develop that relationship by being in constant touch with The All There Is through such activities as the many forms of meditation.

In that relationship you will find total and complete acceptance from The All There Is. In that absolute acceptance you will find happiness that weathers every and all conditions. There is no greater feeling of well-being than to be perfectly accepted just as you are right now. A supreme feeling of well-being is happiness. Said another way, happiness is a feeling of constant well-being.

Develop That Base

Use one of the forms of meditation and begin today to develop healthy optimism that your life be positive. You can turn your life around in this moment by deciding you will develop the foundation and the relationship that leads to the ability to maintain positivity.

Country?s debt at ?comfortable level?, says UDA boss

JOHOR BARU, Sept 30 ? The people should not be concerned over the national debt as it is still at the low level compared with European countries, the United States and developing countries, according to UDA Holdings Bhd chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed

The Pulai MP said the country?s debt at 53.7 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) is still at the comfortable level.

?The debt rate (at 53.7 per cent) is manageable by the government and is considered to be low compared with European countries and the US.

?Compared with developing countries, (the debt) also still at lower and comfortable level. As long as we can pay our immediate interest requirement, we are still safe,? he said here today.

Nur Jazlan, who is also a chartered accountant, urged the rakyat not to be influenced by the opposition who claimed that the country?s debt was high.

He said the country also does not have any problem in tabling a budget deficit, considering the various sources of wealth that can be utilised to accommodate the deficit.

?There?s no country in the world that tables a budget surplus... they all propose budget deficit and loans, the only difference is that Malaysia has room to implement a budget deficit as we have various sources of wealth to accommodate the deficit,? he said.

Malaysia can depend on revenue from commodities and oil as well as assets that can be liquidated to accommodate the deficit.

Budget 2013 announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak last Friday targeted to reduce the budget deficit to four per cent next year compared with 4.5 per cent this year.

Apart from that, Nur Jazlan said the country still has ample room to improve its taxation system to enable it to increase revenue from tax collection.

He said it was wrong to introduce an ?austerity budget? now as it would give an impact to investor?s confidence as well as the country?s economy.

?A Budget that shrinks the country?s economy will give negative impact to the economic performance and damage the rakyat,? said Nur Jazlan.

He also lauded the government?s move to allocate a huge fund to ensure the young generation living in big towns nationwide are capable of owning their own houses. ? Bernama

We ate there this summer when we were visiting family. </p> <p> To go with my meatball sandwich, I ordered the house signature drink, the Bye and Bye.<span>? </span>The bartender filled a mason jar with ice, added a couple of shots of liquor, some juice, and a squirt of something from the soda gun. I loved it. The drink is fruity, but not cloyingly sweet. When I finished it, I decided that I wanted to make them at home. </p> <p> When I got home, I couldn't find a recipe for a Bye and Bye, so I had to get creative. The menu said it contained peach infused bourbon and vodka. I don't have flavor-infused liquors, usually, and didn't want to buy any, so I used regular bourbon and vodka and some peach schnapps. Then I had to figure out the juice. I tasted cranberry juice and guessed that the soda was ginger ale. </p> <p> I mixed it all up, and it tasted right, but the color wasn't pink enough. I tried adding some pomegranate molasses. Whoops, my drink was now brown. I thought about using some grenadine, but then I remembered that we used to make pink lemonade with grape juice when I was a kid, so I added some grape juice concentrate. Pinkness was achieved. </p> <p> I've been drinking these the weekend ever since. This is a great drink anytime, but it's especially nice right now as the last heavy days of late summer ease into the crispness of fall. </p> Disclaimer: I only had one of these and I'm working from memory, so I might not have the juice ingredients exactly right (the liberties I took with the liquor was on purpose), and the color of mine is a little deeper than the original, as I recall. The flavor is spot on, I believe. But if you've had this drink and have any suggestions as to how I can make it closer to the original, leave me a comment!<p> <b>A Pitcher of Bye and Byes</b></p> <p> 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons vodka (3 ounces)</p> <p> 1/4 cup bourbon (2 ounces)</p> <p> 1/4 cup peach liqueur (2 ounces)</p> <p> 1 cup ginger ale</p> <p> 2 cups cranberry juice</p> <p> 2 tablespoons<span>? </span>purple grape juice concentrate (or 1/2 cup grape juice)</p> <p> Mix all ingredients in a 1 quart pitcher. With this background, the aesthetic qualities of her art have both an ?essence? of Chinese culture and a Western expressionist style. In the works that will be shown at Mill Fine Art, Tien ?used [her] right hand to interpret the essence of words and the beauty of lines?and [her] left hand to channel the precipitated accidents that oftentimes reveal an even deeper dynamic.? This combination of focused intention and spontaneous discovery is a marvelous cross-cultural experiment. In many ways, Zhu-qing epitomizes the current generation of Chinese contemporary artists who have found success, studying at Beijing Central Academy of Arts and Design and continuing on to a professorship at Tsinghua University. With her art, Zhu-qing ?hopes to make people think about the important relationship between human beings and the world.? For a 2008 exhibit at the Huan Tie Art Museum, she displayed an abstract painting that used cassette tape ribbon and black hair clips to embroider an elegant human shape. ?Here,? she says, ?artist use new technology to present art.? Under the new terms, any person that discloses information the state considers a secret to any "foreign government or international, foreign organization," even if that person has no access to classified materials and didn't know it was a secret, may be accused of betraying their country and face a potential 20 years in prison. It is unclear when the law, if enacted, would come into effect.</p><p class="promotion-tag-p">Do you know anything about Russia? A quiz.</p><p>"Though these amendments are not even passed yet, many people have already started to become more prudent in their contacts with foreigners," says Andrei Soldatov, editor on Agentura.ru, an online journal devoted to studying the security services, and coauthor of "The New Nobility," which details the return to power in <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348671034_0">Russia</span> of the former Soviet KGB.</p><p>"The new definition of treason that's before the Duma is a direct Soviet legacy. Treason will no longer be about a specific crime, but more about what's in your heart, whether you're truly loyal, as determined by the authorities. I can't even understand how it might be used," says Mr. Soldatov.</p><p>"Now, not only the person who divulges a secret, but also the person who asked ? such as a journalist ? can be charged with treason. It's dangerously vague," he adds.</p><p>BROADENED DEFINITIONS OF ESPIONAGE</p><p>Addressing the Duma last Friday, FSB deputy director Yury Gorbunov said that classic definitions of espionage and treason had to be broadened to include cooperation with international organizations, which might include NGOs and media groups, because the world has become more dangerous.</p><p>"We should include international organizations on the list of agents that can be charged with treason due to the fact that foreign intelligence agencies actively use them to camouflage their spying activity," Mr. Gorbunov said.</p><p>The proposed legislation follows the high-profile ejection of USAID from Russia last week after <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348671034_1">the Kremlin</span> accused it of interfering with Russia's internal political processes.</p><p>In November, the new law requiring NGOs that have any level of political engagement and receive any amount of outside funding to register as "foreign agents" will come into effect.</p><p>A CHILL ON CIVIL SOCIETY?</p><p>The Kremlin almost certainly has just a few prominent organizations in its sights, including the grassroots election-monitoring network Golos, the global corruption watchdog Transparency International, and Russia's main human rights groups Memorial and the Moscow Helsinki Group.</p><p>But Veronika Marchenko, head of Mothers' Right, a charity organization that provides legal aid and other support to families of Russian military conscripts who die in service ? and which often finds itself in friction with the authorities ? says she can see how these new rules will cast a chill over much of Russia's active civil society.</p><p>"We're not political at all, but we do try to influence public opinion," she says.</p><p>"Many NGOs, like ours, became involved in complicated social problems long before the state ever recognized the existence of those problems. We tackled burning issues, raised public consciousness about them, and people came to us for help that they could find nowhere else.... Yes, we attracted foreign funding ? because there was very little to be found in Russia ? and we paid taxes to the state, created jobs, and filled needs that were crying out to be met," Ms. Marchenko says.</p><p>"Now these people in the Duma are going to judge who's an 'agent' and a 'traitor'? They are pushing this country into the past, even into the middle ages," she adds.</p><p>'MEANT TO CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE OF FEAR'</p><p>Yury Schmidt, one of Russia's best-known defense lawyers, says the Duma is crossing a Rubicon with these new treason amendments, beyond which Russia will have to abandon all claims to be a democratic state. He says the current move has to be considered in the context of a spate of draconian legislation passed by parliament since Mr. Putin began his third term last May, including a tough law on public protests, the NGO law, harsh new penalties for "defamation," and an Internet law that enables authorities to create a blacklist of websites that can be summarily shut down.</p><p>"I think these laws are intended not so much to prosecute particular individuals as they are meant to create an atmosphere of fear in the whole society," says Mr. Schmidt.</p><p>"They want to go back to a time when people were afraid to go out to a public meeting, or to give their real name to a journalist, for fear of being charged with slander or treason," he adds.</p><p>Lyudmilla Alexeyeva, head of the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348671034_6">Moscow Helsinki Group</span>, Russia's oldest human rights watchdog, says her organization will never accept the "<span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1348671034_3">foreign agent</span>" label and adds that she doesn't believe the current crackdown is sustainable.</p><p>"The authorities can go on with this course for some time, but not for long," she says.</p><p>"These actions are a dead end that will block Russia's development as a modern country. The further they go down this road, the narrower it becomes and a political explosion grows ever more likely," she adds.</p><p>Another bill submitted to the Duma this week, "on protection of the religious feelings of the citizens of Russia," will effectively criminalize blasphemy.Critics say this is probably an effort to strengthen the Kremlin's hand in reaction to the controversial summer trial and sentencing of the three members of the band Pussy Riot, who were charged with profaning an Orthodox altar with an obscene anti-Putin "punk prayer."</p><p>Earlier this month the Duma expelled one of the body's few dissenting deputies, Gennady Gudkov, and this week deprived another, Ilya Ponomaryov, of his right to vote for a month.</p><p>"The Duma has no independent minds anymore," says Mr. Ponomaryov.</p><p>"The United Russia majority is doing only what Putin wants. And they never stop surprising me. When I think something is too unreasonable to consider, they go ahead and do it. Stand By Me: a role play based on life has no plot, per say. It is an interactive role play in which the characters create the problems, solutions, relationships, and overall story line. Our characters are basically living life, and something like that just isn't premeditated...no matter how hard we try to make it.

How should i make my character?
For now only show your character as a CHILD. Younger than a teenager, but old enough to talk and think for themselves. We will add to our profiles as our characters grow and change.

Where does this role play take place?
In a small town in the US. Where exactly? Well, that's for us to decide in the OOC before we get things started!

Will this be limited?
As much as it pains me to do so, yes, this role play will have a limit on players accepted. Although you can create however many characters you are able to handle, I just can't have too many different thoughts and ideas going into this. I have to ensure my dedicated role players are receiving the attention and responses they deserve.

I will allow a maximum of seven role players at this time.

How will you accept players?
This is the most important process, and yes, I can be picky when selecting. I will choose my role players on the bases of four categories:
Literacy. I can not stress this enough. I am extremely tired of reading short and choppy sentences. Not everyone can write five-eight paragraph responses, and that is perfectly fine, but I promise you, it is possible to write an amazing post with a minimal of three paragraphs if you know how.

* Commitment. It doesn't matter how many role players I have, everyone plays an important part. I beg you, if you join this role play, stick it out through the end...or at least tell us if you will no longer participate.

And yes, I will be looking to see if you are active in the OOC

*Willingness to come up with ideas of your own within reason. Do not play your character(s) off of another. Be creative.

*Imagination. That pretty much speaks for itself.

Also, I placed something really important in the introduction section that MUST be present on your profile to be accepted. Without that, you are wasting my time.

Lastly, incomplete profiles that are submitted will not be accepted...there will be no exceptions.

Will there be limits to what can happen?
Of course. Your character can not be the center of attention at all time, nor can they be "perfect". This is life, let's keep things realistic. I know bad things happen, but please do not make your character a sob story.

Is romance a factor in this role play?
I'm sure romances will work their way into a plot, but once again keep it realistic. I urge dating among the group, as well as outsiders. There is no "forever" from childhood til death, at least not in this role play.

They will be break ups, betrayal, love triangles...or squares, and anything else you can think of. Do not have a fit if your "love interest" moves on to another sometimes or just ends things. THIS IS ABOUT LIFE and it does happen

Central london property bubbles again

Above is an interesting video from the Financial Times about the Central London property bubble, which appears to have re-emerged on the back of heavy foreign buying.

The video contains loads of interesting charts and analysis. For example, there?s this chart plotting Greater London property values against those in Miami (rebased to USD). As you can see, London home prices have recovered most of their value lost in the wake of the GFC.

However, the video notes that almost all of the gains in Greater London home prices since 2008-09 have been in the Prime Central London market ? i.e. the top 2% to 3% of homes. This is illustrated by the next chart showing house prices in Prime Central London, Greater London, and the UK as a whole (rebased to USD):

As well as the below scatter chart showing how cheaper London homes prior to the pre-GFC price peak are typically the ones that have lost the most value:

The Prime Central London price boom has been driven predominantly by foreign buyers, as shown by the next chart, which shows that only 19% of sales of new Central London developments (not just Prime) are to locals:

The video concludes by questioning whether the dynamics pushing-up Central London property values are sustainable. Foreign demand tends to be fluid, and any sharp slowing in Asia, or resolution in the Euro zone (thereby removing Central London?s ?safe haven? status), could upset the apple cart.

CU live blog: Washington State leads 21-7 at halftime over Buffs

?Colorado rallied for three touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the game to claim a 35-34 win Saturday at Washington State when quarterback Jordan Webb scored on a 4-yard keeper with 11 seconds left in the game.

Facing third-and-1 at the WSU 11-yard line, Colorado picked up a first down with 1:29 to play on Christian Powell's 4-yard run. But on the next play, Colorado had a scare when Powell fumbled with 1:03, but Nick Kasa recovered it at the 6.

On second down, Powell got to the 2-yard line, but then lost two yards on the third-down run.

Colorado called time out, and had one snap for the game facing fourth-and-goal at the WSU 4. Webb took the shotgun snap and scored on the draw play to win the game.

Buffs miss chance

After a defensive stop, Colorado gave the ball right back to Washington State midway through the third quarter.

Colorado started a drive at its 36-yard line after WSU missed a 53-yard field-goal attempt. But Cougars cornerback Daniel Simmons intercepted Jordan Webb's pass to Gerald Thomas on the first play of the Buffs' drive at the WSU 24-yard line.

Buffs get break

Colorado scored on a one-play drive, converting on a fumble recovery and pulling within 21-14 with 9:53 left in the third quarter on quarterback Jordan Webb's 1-yard dive.

Colorado caught a break when Washington State's Carl Winston fumbled at the 15-yard line and Colorado's Terrell Smith picked it up at the 10 and ran it down to the 1.

Winston was hit by linebackers Paul Vigo and Jon Major.

Numbers at the break

First-half stats: Colorado had 254 yards of offense, including 177 yards passing by quarterback Jordan Webb (16-of-21). Washington State has 262 yards led by sophomore QB Connor Halliday, 19-of-27 for 224 yards and three touchdowns). Halliday has completions with eight receivers, Webb with seven.

Teams quiet at end of first half

Looking to score just before halftime, CU started a drive with 2:56 left in the first half after forcing a punt. Colorado moved the ball to the Washington State 39-yard line with just over a minute to play. But quarterback Jordan Webb was sacked and fumbled the ball at midfield WSU recovered at the CU 47-yard line.

CU's defense held the Cougars to three-and-out, and Colorado got the ball again with 38 seconds left in the half but ran out the clock on the ground.

Cougars pounce

Washington State's offense stayed hot and took advantage of a short field to claimed a 21-7 lead with 11:48 left in the second quarter when Connor Halliday found Isiah Myers at the goal line for the 15-yard touchdown.

After falling behind 14-7, Colorado's Tyler McCullough lost a fumble at the 39-yard line to give WSU a short field. Facing fourth-and-3 at the CU 32, the Cougars were called for a false start. Even after losing five yards, WSU went for the fourth-down play and Halliday completed an 11-yard play to Myers over the middle at the 26.

Cougars regain lead

Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday threw his second TD pass, finding Marquess Wilson for a 23-yard play just 26 seconds into the second half.

The six-play, 80-yard drive came after CU missed a field goal just less than 1? minutes earlier.

CU drive stalls

Colorado moved the ball after an interception but the drive ended with no points after Will Oliver missed a 30-yard field-goal attempt with 52 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Buffs converted two third-down plays to keep the drive going but stalled in the red zone. Gerald Thomas' 16-yard run got the Buffs first down at the WSU 14-yard line, but CU had to settle for a field-goal try.

After being sacked on second down, WSU quarterback Connor Halliday was picked off by Colorado's Jered Bell, who returned it 37 yards to the CU 40-yard line to set up the Buffs' drive.

Colorado kept the ball for more than four minutes as the Buffs tied the score 7-7 on a 16-yard TD pass from Jordan Webb to Nelson Spruce with 9:04 left in the first quarter.

Webb kept the drive alive with a 5-yard scramble on third-and-3 blitz at the CU 32-yard line. CU scored five plays later.

Washington State scored less than two minutes into the game when sophomore quarterback Connor Halliday found Gabe Marks for a 32-yard touchdown play and a 7-0 lead with 13:18 left in the first quarter.

Halliday, who was 4-of-5 passing on the drive for 72 yards, was picked as the starting quarterback against the Buffs. The backup had a hot hand last week, throwing four first-half touchdowns in the 35-27 win over UNLV. He started in place of senior Jeff Tuel, who has been slowed by injuries.
